Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy – #LETSCHANGETHEGAME Cardiac Screening in Sport.
Those of you who have read last months newsletter would have seen the article regarding a young footballer (soccer player for my American readers) named Tobi Alabi, who collapsed during a match. I had focused on this event to encourage sports teams to have a Defibrillator on site as it will save lives!!!
Since then Tobi has been investigated for HCM a thickening of the heart that can lead to potentially fatal arrhythmias and sadly had to retire from football and relinquish his dream of forging a career as a professional athlete.
Hypertophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a thickening of the heart muscle that can be Arrhythmogenic – causing dangerous heart rhythms. The cause is primarily a genetic mutation which affects the Sarcomeres. Sarcomeres make up the lions share of the heart cells called Myocytes and these changes in the Sarcomeres can disrupt the normal electrical activity of the heart.
It is the leading cause of Sudden Cardiac Death in young adults!
Tobi is now embarking on a project to change the game and is encouraging clubs to implement stricter Cardiac screening. In this fantastic interview below he tells his story! Please WATCH IT!, I truly believe every body can take something from it. If nothing else – how to turn your adversity in to your motivation a transferable life lesson.
As a healthcare professional I found it an incredible insight into the patient experience… I won’t look at an exercise test the same again!
Tobi has his own website which heads up his campaign #LETSCHANGETHEGAME I recommend you take a look and help support a worthy cause. I will be doing a full post on HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) soon to help raise awareness! Watch this space.
PLEASE remember to share this post every way you can and contribute to life saving screening of young Athletes!
Thanks for Reading/Watching
Time to take the Misses out for a drink!
